First off what is an active rest day? This is a day you take off from the gym, but you find other ways to stay active to get your blood going to attribute to cardio vascular, mental, physical and emotional health. Active Rest Days include light exercises that stimulate a recovery process and will actually speed up your recovery in turn making you feel stronger and more energized for when you get back into your workout routines.
I personally do not train 7 days a week and it varies. So what do I do on my days of rest? I get outside and I enjoy the great outdoors while I can, weather permitting of course.
I am lucky enough to live in Utah and we have so many things we can do to have active rest days. We have hiking trials everywhere, bodies of water to play on to go wake boarding or wake surfing and a lot of parks to take walks on or to go jogging with the kids.
Some activities you may consider for taking active rest days might include playing a sport, swimming, longer walks with kids or animals, hiking, yoga, biking or foam rolling and stretching.
During an active rest day I also use this time to get my mind right. I write down my thoughts from the week, rewrite goals and just breathe in the day while reflecting on the past week. In short active rest days are very beneficial to your overall health and well-being and I highly recommend including this in with your fitness journey.
So get out and have some fun!
